Hybrid Golf Club

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

Finally I took the plunge and bought a Nike CPR Hybrid wood (replaces 3-4 iron). I got a good deal from rockbottomgolf.com for $80 (elsewhere it is at least $100). It is a lot easier to hit than the 3, 4, even the 5 irons. The big head and low center of the gravity corrects small inaccuracies and still provides reasonable hit. Even if it is not a perfectly centered hit, the ball still goes fairly straight and decent distance. When hit right, it easily sails past the 150 yard marker.

Golf – the fun/frustrating game

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

I continue to find new things to work on my golf swing. While adding new variables to the mechanism of the swing, I sometimes will forget old ones. For example the new thing I’m working on right now is the synchronization of the hip-turn and the down-swing of the arm. If the hip-turns to quickly, the shot goes to the right, otherwise left. And the old thing I’m keeping an eye on is at the top of the back-swing the right elbow should be down and right shoulder blade pointing toward target.

Finally, Google created an answer to my.yahoo.com. Like many google new applications, it came out of the gate rocking.

Google front page

Tuesday, November 1st, 2005

Recent issue of Fast Company has an article (“Google’s secret weapon”) about the product management of the google.com front page. Some take-aways:

  • Managing a simple front page is not easy – especially when it is Google. Every biz unit or new project wants to get on the front page, it takes great decipline and solid metrics to maintain a simple and effective one.
  • Once the page becomes cluttered (think MSN or Yahoo!), there’s no turning back. However, Yahoo! is “loosing” some weight recently by my observation.
  • Less is not more, but enough is more.

As for web portal, maybe every website should support some level of syndication. Then in the next version of Firefox, people can assemble their own web portal – for example, mail from Yahoo, search from Google, news from MSN, etc in one page. This is different from the web-widget idea since no s/w programming is required.

iPod Video

Tuesday, November 1st, 2005

Apple is doing well these days. Seven months ago I bought the stock at 43.12, after some up and downs, it now stands at 57.75. It’s a good 30% profit with my modest 100 shares investment. I bought the shares for a different reason – betting that the company will broaden their software reach to Intel computers. That will still happen. But the stock price has been driven up by Apple’s success in launching the latest iPods – first Nano, but more importantly the Video.
Once again, a not so new idea has been excellently executed by Apple. The quality and coolness of the device, together with the great integration of buying experience on iTune made this iPod another success.
