Golf – the fun/frustrating game

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

I continue to find new things to work on my golf swing. While adding new variables to the mechanism of the swing, I sometimes will forget old ones. For example the new thing I’m working on right now is the synchronization of the hip-turn and the down-swing of the arm. If the hip-turns to quickly, the shot goes to the right, otherwise left. And the old thing I’m keeping an eye on is at the top of the back-swing the right elbow should be down and right shoulder blade pointing toward target.

Golf lesson

I went to the driving range today. Gary the pro gave me 1 hour of very useful instruction. Now I can much better relate my posture to how well I can hit the ball. This kind of feedback is very important to me. I can then go to practice on my own following the instructions.

Golf instructions:

  1. Grip – left hand, heal pad on top; right hand cover left thumb, right thumb goes to left of the shaft.
  2. Stand in front of the handle, keep club head flat and perpendicular to direction.
  3. Posture – slight knee flex, butt up and out, work on my arching of the back. Chin up, long arms.

Swing

  1. Parallel to the ground, parallel to the target, club head in front of chest
  2. Throw water over shoulder, don’t get wet, arm extension; weight on top of a flexed right knee.
  3. Down (and inside)
  4. Hit, big follow through (stand up tall)
